WHAT IS MODULAR ATPL ?

Follow the essential steps to become an airline pilot and what to expect during your training journey.

A COMPLETE GUIDE FOR ASPIRING PILOTS

For anyone considering a career as an airline pilot, one of the first decisions you will need to make is whether to pursue a Modular ATPL or an Integrated ATPL. While both routes ultimately lead to a professional pilot licence, they differ significantly in structure, flexibility, cost, and learning pace.

This guide explains everything you need to know about the Modular ATPL pathway, helping you determine whether it is the right choice for your aviation career.

WHAT DOES MODULAR ATPL MEAN?

A Modular Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) is a training route where pilot training is completed in separate stages, or “modules,” rather than through one continuous full-time course.

Students progress through each qualification individually, typically in the following order:

  1. Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
  2. Hour Building
  3. Night Rating
  4. ATPL Theoretical Knowledge
  5. Instrument Rating (IR)
  6. Multi-Engine Rating (MEP)
  7. Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)
  8. Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC)
  9. Type Rating on either Airbus or Boeing

Each module can be completed at a pace that suits the student’s schedule, finances, and personal commitments.

HOW DOES MODULAR ATPL TRAINING WORK?

Unlike a university-style aviation programme, modular training allows students to complete training over an extended period. Some students train full-time and complete the route quickly, while others train part-time alongside employment or studies.

This flexibility makes Modular ATPL particularly attractive to:

  • Working professionals changing careers
  • University students pursuing aviation alongside their degree
  • Individuals who wish to spread training costs over time
  • Students unable to commit to a full-time integrated programme
  • Students who are still attending school

The modular route enables you to build qualifications step by step until you meet the requirements to apply for airline positions.

ADVANTAGES OF MODULAR ATPL

1 – LOWER INITIAL FINANCIAL COMMITMENT

One of the biggest advantages of modular training is that students do not need to fund the entire programme upfront.

Instead, costs are paid as each phase of training is completed, making aviation training more accessible to many aspiring pilots.

2 – GREATER FLEXIBILITY

Students can schedule training around personal and professional commitments. This allows individuals to continue working while progressing toward their pilot career. Students choosing Modular ATPL can also conduct the theoretical part of the training by self study and only visit Cyprus for the Examination Stages.

3 – LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE

Some students prefer additional time to develop skills and confidence before advancing to the next stage. The modular route accommodates different learning styles and progression rates. You are able to follow your own pace.

4 – CHOICE OF TRAINING ORGANISATIONS

Students can complete different modules at various Approved Training Organisations (ATOs), allowing them to select training providers based on quality, location, availability, or cost. That means a student may also train in different countries.

5 – REDUCED FINANCIAL RISK

Since students pay progressively throughout the programme, they retain greater control over their investment and training decisions. Starting your PPL would only cost you initially €2500 (Two thousand five hundred euros) for your ground school and pay accordingly based on your flight schedule.

IS MODULAR ATPL BETTER THAN INTEGRATED ATPL?

The answer is no, you end up with both options at the same result, however modular is the usual choice for someone that is unable to commit fulltime.
